When the city's Department of Health ran its first post-holiday beach samples on July 6, every section of Coney Island came back above the federal closure limit.
All six stretches — from Brighton 15th Street west to West 37th Street — tested above 70 MPN/100 ml for enterococci, the fecal indicator bacteria that triggers swim advisories and closures, according to health data published on NYC Open Data. The West 16th to West 27th section registered 384 MPN/100 ml; the Brighton 15th to 6th section returned 197 MPN/100 ml. The lowest reading, at Ocean Parkway to West 8th Street, was 146 MPN/100 ml — still more than twice the threshold at which DOH issues beach closures under U.S. EPA standards.
The same test round found far worse conditions elsewhere. Cedar Grove Beach on Staten Island hit 5,794 MPN/100 ml — 83 times the closure threshold. Midland Beach reached 1,780 MPN/100 ml, South Beach 2,014, and Wolfe's Pond 1,789. Other Brooklyn beaches also failed: Gerritsen/Kiddie Beach clocked 609 MPN/100 ml; Sea Gate Beach Club, 383; Manhattan Beach, 218.
Those July 6 samples are the first official data point after the holiday weekend. City beaches are tested once a week during the swim season. On July 4, when the readings mattered most for the hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers at the shore, there was no current data — only results from the prior week, which had shown normal levels.
A beachgoer at Coney Island posted on social media that afternoon that visible debris was washing ashore near the jetties by 4:30 p.m. The account described filing a 311 complaint and alerting a lifeguard who appeared unaware. Whether DOH issued formal closures after the July 6 results posted is not documented in the city's public records. By July 8, when the department sampled again, all six Coney Island sections had returned to between 9.9 and 20 MPN/100 ml.
The weekly testing interval is a standing feature of how New York manages its beaches. It means that when a contamination event lands on a Friday or a holiday, the city has no real-time data to act on — and no formal mechanism to notify swimmers until the next scheduled round clears the lab. At Coney Island on July 4, whatever was in the water on the busiest beach day of the year wasn't quantified until the weekend was over.
