NYPD announced July 17 that one suspect — a 17-year-old — has been arrested in a 29-robbery chain-snatch spree that hit at least a dozen Brooklyn and Queens neighborhoods from June 15 to July 10. A second suspect, described as the 17-year-old's accomplice, remains at large.

Police have arrested one of two moped-riding robbery suspects who, according to NYPD officials, spent 25 days this summer stripping chains off the necks of pedestrians across Brooklyn and Queens — 29 incidents in all — before detectives publicly identified the pattern last week.

NYPD announced the arrest July 17. One suspect, a 17-year-old, is in custody; his accomplice remains at large. Both men, wearing black balaclavas, rode the same moped and targeted victims aged 14 to 80. None were injured. Police said most robberies happened in the late morning or early afternoon — brazen daylight work, in some cases hitting multiple victims in the same block within the hour.

The spree ran June 15 through July 10 across at least a dozen neighborhoods: Greenpoint, Williamsburg, Astoria, Long Island City, Jackson Heights, Ridgewood, Ozone Park, Forest Hills, Richmond Hill, Bayside, Flushing, and Briarwood. July 5 was the pair's most active day — six robberies, spread across Queens and Brooklyn. On two occasions they grabbed vehicles rather than jewelry: a moped taken from a 41-year-old on 87th Road in Briarwood on July 1, and an unattended motorcycle snatched from a 29-year-old on Roosevelt Avenue on July 4.

The public announcement came after one arrest, framed as a tip appeal: NYPD is asking anyone with information to contact the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS. Citywide, robberies are down 12 percent and grand larcenies 5 percent compared to the same period last year — but NYPD data shows both categories ticking up slightly in Queens North, one of the spree's primary hunting grounds.

The second suspect has not been named publicly. Charges against the 17-year-old have not been disclosed by the department.
