The Sol Goldman Recreation Center pool at Bay Street and Clinton Street opened July 18 at 11 a.m. after a flooded filter plant delayed the second consecutive summer start. Parks Commissioner Tricia Shimamura confirmed a $122 million renovation of the pool and rec center is planned to begin in 2028.

The Olympic-sized pool at the Sol Goldman Recreation Center in Red Hook — Bay Street at Clinton Street — opened Saturday, July 18, at 11 a.m., the city Parks Department confirmed. The Adult Lap Swim program is back Monday morning at 7 a.m.

The opening comes after a delay that kept the pool dark during a heat wave that pushed temperatures past 100 degrees over the July 4 weekend. Workers discovered a flooded filter plant with damaged motors and other equipment shortly before the June 27 opening date — the second consecutive summer the facility missed its start, following a broken-pipe closure that wiped out most of last season.

Parks Commissioner Tricia Shimamura thanked the neighborhood for its patience in a statement released Thursday.

The pool is one of the city's largest free public facilities, drawing roughly 40,000 visitors in a typical summer, according to Parks data, and one of several marking 90 years of operation this season. During the closure, Parks activated the site's spray showers and the pool lot continued as a free lunch site under a city Department of Education partnership — meals available to anyone 18 and under, no registration required.

Parks officials said a $122 million capital renovation of the pool and recreation center is set to begin in 2028, a budget commitment that would represent the facility's most significant overhaul since the Robert Moses era.
